Dr. Patrick Choy Distinguished Lectureship

The Dr. Patrick Choy Distinguished Lectureship is an annual event held in honour of Dr. Patrick Choy, Professor Emeritus, Special Advisor to the President and Dean of Medicine, and former Association Dean (Research) of the College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Health Sciences. An internationally recognized leader in the study of cardiovascular phospholipids and lipoproteins, Dr. Choy’s research established novel connections between lipid metabolism, cardiac arrythmias, and atherosclerosis.

Last year our guest was the Nobel Laureate, Prof. Harald zur Hausen.

This year our guest is Dr. Alan Bernstein. Dr. Bernstein is President & CEO of CIFAR, a Canadian-based global research organization addressing important questions facing our world. Previously, he led the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise and was the founding President of CIHR where he led a transformation of health research in Canada.  Dr. Bernstein’s research interests include hematopoiesis, embryonic development, retrovirology and cancer.

Dr. Bernstein is this year’s recipient of the Henry Friesen International Prize in Health Research and was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2015. His numerous other awards include Officer of the Order of Canada and the Gairdner Wightman.

In addition to group meetings with Dr. Bernstein (which you can sign up for here: https://goo.gl/forms/ArLZd3280BIIJFOD2), this year we have three main events you should make note of:

1. Dr. Bernstein’s lecture entitled: A golden age for health research: How Canada can best contribute.
This lecture is on Monday, Oct. 16th @ 3 PM in Frederic Gaspard Theatre (Theatre A).

2. Networking social on Monday (Oct. 16th) evening at 8 PM at Chaise Cafe in St. Boniface. Appetizers will be served at this event. For this, student tickets are $5, tickets for all other interested parties are $10.

3. Our classic student luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 17th @ 12:30 pm in Buhler Atrium open to all graduate students. Students should come prepared with questions they’d like to ask Dr. Bernstein if they have any.
